Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009), a well-known American artist, was born in Pennsylvania, which is to the west of New York City, and stayed most of his life in either his home state or Maine, located in the northeasternmost of the United States. In both regions, he depicted local landscapes and people living there. Among his works, Christina’s World (1948) is valued particularly highly as being his masterpiece that represents the American arts of the 20th century.
In 1939, Wyeth met Christina Olson and her younger brother Alvaro Olson in Maine, where he owned a summer house. Fascinated by the siblings and their 150-year-old house, the artist began visiting the house and maintained a friendship with them for 30 years. At this house, known as the Olson House, he created many masterpieces, including Christina’s World. This exhibition displays about 60 works by Andrew Wyeth—watercolor paintings and sketches, including studies for Christina’s World—from the collection of Marunuma Art Park in Asaka City, Saitama Prefecture. These valuable exhibits highlight the Olson House, which Wyeth had continued to observe and depict, along with reminiscences of the people associated with the house.

Café Event
During the exhibition period, the museum’s café will offer special original cakes crafted by RIHGA Royal Hotel Kyoto on the themes of the exhibition.
The Olsons’ Blueberries
Whenever she had Andrew Wyeth over at her house, Christina Olson always baked a pie with blueberries grown by her brother Alvaro. From such episodes that suggest their warm friendship, we conceived The Olsons' Blueberries. The pâte brisée (shortcrust pastry) is filled with sweet-and-sour blueberry jam over rich cream cheese. Why not savor this dessert to relive the moments Wyeth spent at the Olson House?
Wyeth's Hometown Apples
Wyeth was born in Pennsylvania. His childhood home had a large garden with many apple trees, and Wyeth loved his mother’s apple pie. Inspired by this favorite of the artist, Wyeth's Hometown Apples is generously loaded with apple jam with plenty of pulp. The layer of rich almond cream between the pâte brisée and the jam creates a combination of different textures. This pastry will evoke a sense of comfort and nostalgia.
VODKA Time
Wyeth often enjoyed a shot of vodka before dinner, usually with ice and sliced orange. Based on his recipe, we created an original cocktail that has a refreshing taste of vodka with slices of orange with the peel. In our café, enjoy the moment Wyeth called “vodka time.”
・This drink has a high alcohol content. Please note that only one shot will be served per person.
