Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art opened in the spring of 1996. At the heart of its collection are modern Western paintings such as Claude Monet's "Water Lilies" series as well as ceramics and other craft works of the Mingei (folk crafts) movement in Japan, which were collected by Tamesaburo Yamamoto, the first president of Asahi Breweries, and then donated at the time of the Museum’s opening. This time, the Museum showcases masterpieces created by various artists, chosen from its collection of approximately 1,000 artworks.
At the Underground Jewelry Box annex, paintings featuring water scenes, such as Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies” series and Paul Signac’s “Venice,” are exhibited. At the Dream Box annex, artists who were involved in key post-Impressionism art movements such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee are featured. At the Main Building, we examine the works of two of the greatest British ceramic artists, Bernard Leach, who was born 135 years ago, and Lucie Rie, who was born 120 years ago, by dissecting their relationship as artists.
The exhibition begins in spring with blooming flowers in the Museum garden and is held through early summer when you can find ponds full of water lilies. We look forward to welcoming you and hope you will enjoy these exquisite masterpieces along with the historical architecture and beautiful scenery at the Museum.
