This is an exhibition which commemorates the 130th anniversary of the birth of Kanjiro Kawai (1890–1966),a potter.
Kawai worked in Gojozaka, Kyoto ever since setting up his kiln there in 1920. His diverse output continues to fascinate modern audiences today, more than 50 years after his death.
Kawai was a lifelong friend of Tamesaburo Yamamoto (1893–1966), who was the first president of Asahi Breweries and a patron of Kawai and the Mingei movement. Drawn primarily from the Tamesaburo Yamamoto Collection, which constitutes the core of this museum’s holdings since its founding, this exhibition presents a rare, comprehensive survey of Kanjiro Kawai’s oeuvre from all phases of his career.
