Higashiyama Kaii (1908–1999), known as a natural landscape painter, created many paintings through dialogue with nature. On the other hand, he loved old historic towns and continued to sketch historical streetscapes from the early days of his painting career.
This exhibition mainly consists of sketches drawn by Higashiyama Kaii and owned by the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum / Higashiyama Kaii Gallery that are based on pictorial materials he collected during his travels in Europe.
The exhibition also displays several paintings that he created based on his own travel sketches. Unlike paintings, which usually take a long time to produce, sketches directly convey emotions that arise in the painter in the moment. Kaii’s sketches reveal his free and unbounded mind as well as how he deeply identified with those living in old historical towns harmoniously at peace with nature while preserving their towns.
* The line-up will be changed in the middle of the exhibition
