Artists of all ages and countries have been inspired by colors and opened various new horizons in artistic expression through the pursuit of colors. When we see a color, we can feel what it symbolizes and signifies. We also can enjoy the color combinations and rhythms created by colors and shapes. Color combinations evoke various feelings, such as cold, warm, light, heavy, exciting, calm, positive, and negative.

　This is the first exhibition in which works by American abstract painter Sam Francis owned by Asahi Breweries are displayed in the Asahi Beer Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art. In addition, the exhibition introduces a diverse variety of color representations, including ceramic works of Kanjiro Kawai and Shoji Hamada, who have both created new kinds of glazes by adjusting the subtle combinations of ingredients, and paintings of impressionist artists and their successors, who tried to represent light and shadow using color combinations created with short, disconnected brushstrokes.
