This exhibition looks at “forms” as a key to contemporary British pottery, presenting works by Lucie RIE(1902-1995) and Hans COPER(1920-1981) from the ceramic collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, as well as works by RIE, Bernard LEACH(1887-1979) and Shoji HAMADA(1894-1978) from our own collection, to discover their beauty against the backdrop of the life and times.
Two potters who emigrated to Britain during the WWII, Lucie RIE from Austria and Hans COPER from Germany, had worked together in the same studio for many years and consequently influenced each other.
For example, the same techniques, such as joining thinly lathed parts, can be seen in most of their works. This combination of shapes and delicately thin clay makes it possible to create new variation of dramatically balanced forms and sophisticated mood.
On the 20th anniversary of the death of Lucie RIE, this exhibition is an excellent opportunity to reassess the works of these extremely influential potters.
