The world-famous sculptor Isamu Noguchi was born to a Japanese father and American mother. Ginseng spread its roots deep in the soil is a plant used in Far-Eastern medicine and symbolizes strong vitality. On the other hand, a clown embodies both humor and pain, and is said to be a symbol of Western culture, something very much not firmly rooted like ginseng. The two motifs indicate East and West, giving us a glimpse into the artist himself forever shifting back and forth between polar opposites and contradictions.
