Born in Barcelona, Spain, Miró moved to Paris in 1919, where he later joined the Surrealists in 1924 and pursued bohemian forms of expression. When this picture was painted, depicting a human form combined with geometrical shapes, was painted in 1935, Miró’s home region of Catalonia was heading towards civil war. While the portrayal of the face is humorous, the coloring is melancholic and the lines crossing in the background almost seem like a crucifix, reflecting Miró’s mind at that time.
