Barbizon painters such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Jean-François Millet all lived and worked in the Barbizon area while pursuing their own individual painting visions. Troyon was best known as a master of animal paintings, portraying cattle such as cow and sheep. The influence of the seventeenth-century Dutch animal paintings he encountered on a trip to the Netherlands in 1847 is evident in this painting.
