This picture is a doroe collected by Soetsu Yanagi, and the way it is mounted was also devised by Soetsu. Doroe is a style popular in the Edo era, using clay paint to depict landscapes as well as exotic scenes.
This example is a particularly fine one and was one of Tamesaburo Yamamoto's favorite artworks. It is said that it was always hung in the tokonoma (alcove) at Mikuni-so.
