In Monet’s Giverny garden there was a Japanese-style arched bridge over the pond. Monet painted the bridge in many of his works. This particular painting was made while he was suffering from cataracts. His illness is seen in the way that the painting looks as though it were covered by a veil of air, though his brush strokes are nonetheless powerful and energetic. Monet’s artistic passion was present even when his eyes were deteriorating in his later years.
