Fired in St Ives, this work resembles the hand-molded earthenware Leach used to make during his time in Japan. In the 1920's Shoji Hamada and Leach built a kiln and started working together. During this period they experimented with hand-molded earthenware fired at low temperatures. While they waited and watched the kiln they would recall their days making pottery in Japan. This pottery features bold and free grape motifs, which are characteristic of Leach's early work.
