When Leach stayed at Shoji Hamada's house in Mashiko Town in Haga, Tochigi Prefecture, he made this depiction of chickens playing in a bamboo field behind Hamada's house. While the lines are drawn playfully with squid ink, the detailed portrayals of the bamboo forest and the movement of the chickens are superb, as is the exceptional use of the brush and ink. It is one of Leach's most remarkable sketches.
