Shoji Hamada
Shoji Hamada
Pitcher, stoneware, rice husk ash glaze
Period
c.1960

The collection of brewery president Tamesaburo Yamamoto includes a number of pitchers. Shoji Hamada, who traveled to Britain with Bernard Leach, saw numerous pitchers there and researched methods for making them. This example follows the shape of medieval British pottery. From the powerful shape of its ridged body to the details of the spout and the handle, every element embodies quality.
