Music Box “Mikado” (Germany)
c.1895
Length54×Width86×Height228cm
This is a disc music box manufactured by Polyphon Musikwerke, one of the three major music box manufactures. It uses Polyphon Musikwerke's largest discs and has a distinctively rich sound. “Mikado” is an unofficial name originating from the eponymous comic operetta popular at the time.
When a coin is inserted, the disc turns once and plays a song for about two minutes. The Museum currently plays a song every hour, allowing visitors to hear sounds that have not changed for over 100 years.
