Kuroda was impressed by a lecture by Kanjiro Kawai and he started making visits to Kawai's house, where he met Soetsu Yanagi and Goro Aota at around the same time. He joined Kamigamo Mingei Kyodan (Kamigamo Folk Craft Cooporative) led by Soetsu Yanagi, along with Goro Aota. This work is part of the furniture and tools created by young members of the guild for the Mingei-kan, a special venue at the Exhibition for the Promotion of Domestic Products in Commemoration of the Enthronement of the Emperor, held in Ueno Park in 1928. Aota's seat cushions also created to accompany the set of table and chair are preserved in their original condition.

Tatsuaki Kuroda

1904－1982

Born in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. His father was a lacquer artist and he taught himself wood lacquer crafts at his father's studio. Under the influence of Soetsu Yanagi, he founded Kamigamo Mingei Kyodan (Kamigamo Folk Craft Cooperative), along with Goro Aota in 1927. In 1970, he was designated a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Properties for his woodworking and in the following year was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
