Tonomura started working in textiles under the guidance of Soetsu Yanagi. Along with producing a number of works as an artist, he was a practitioner of the Mingei Movement, actively promoting the theories of Mingei by setting up folk art crafts centers in Kurashiki and Kumamoto. Tonomura had a long career and created this work in his early phase. The work passed into the collection from Mikuni-so.
