Mairet advocated and practiced the revival of handwork at a time when society was rapidly industrializing. Meeting Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada brought her into contact with the Mingei Movement. Mairet came to Japan in 1926 with the help of Soetsu Yanagi and Shoji Hamada, and held an exhibition with Leach in Tokyo. It is thought that Tamesaburo Yamamoto purchased this work at the exhibition for his daughter.
