Cizhou Kiln is one of the largest kiln workshops based in Hebei Province. It is known for its wide range of techniques, including keshogake (engobe) style, and has a long tradition dating back to the Chinese Song and Yuan dynasties. Tamesaburo Yamamoto purchased this piece after the Second World War from an art dealer specializing in Chinese art.

The circle involved in the Mingei Movement such as Soetsu Yanagi had a preference for free and loose brush strokes, a distinctive feature of private kilns. For this reason, the Japan Folk Crafts Museum features a collection of Cizhou wares.
