This unique work features on one side an image of seemingly Chinese figures talking under a hardy banana tree, while on the other it has images of Japanese landscapes. A note written by Shoji Hamada remains in the box.
Based on the imagery and motifs, the work was presumed an imitation of on-glaze decorated pottery from the Chinese Ming Dynasty. However, the mild overall tone and open style of the painting indicate that it is an example of Imari ware. The work passed into the collection from Mikuni-so.
