This bowl features vivid lines drawn using the kushigaki method, and was intended for kneading dough and also has a milk spout. The foremost disciple of Bernard Leach, Michael Cardew, while little known in Japan, was an important figure in the history of British pottery, regarded equally as highly as his mentor. Through Leach, Cardew also had links to the Japanese Mingei Movement, and this exceptional work is said to have been purchased by Tamesaburo Yamamoto through an exhibition sale in Osaka organized by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada.
