Similar to Shino ware from the Mino region, this bowl is sprinkled all over with feldspathic glaze. Having close relationships with Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, Lucie Rie's understanding of oriental pottery became highly developed over her long pottery career. While this work shows the influence of Japanese pottery, the loose and elegant elliptic shape of the rim, along with the light adjustment of the glaze, reveals the strong creative ambition of the artist.
